BRUSSELS (AP) ? The bailout has saved Europe, for now, but it’s unlikely to save Greece.

The euro130 billion ($172 billion) rescue ? agreed to Tuesday after an all-night summit of European ministers ? prevented an uncontrolled bankrupcty and calmed investors worried that a Greek default would have started a chain reaction across Europe. But it left key problems unresolved.

Draconian budget cuts could keep Greece mired in recession after five straight years. The deal doesn’t directly address the debt problems in other struggling countries in the 17-country zone that uses the euro. Spending cuts could reduce tax revenue and possibly worsen the government’s finances.

“You can’t shrink your way out of a recession,” said Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the liberal Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington. “What they are doing to Greece really makes no economic sense.”

In Athens, Greeks reacted with a mixture of relief and fear of a dark future.

“I don’t see it with any joy because again we’re being burdened with loans, loans, loans, with no end in sight,” architect Valia Rokou said in the Greek capital.

Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said the agreement managed to prevent imminent catastrophe: “we avoided the nightmare scenario,” he said.

The agreement was the second massive bailout of Greece following a euro110 billion ($146 billion) rescue in 2010 that didn’t return the country to solvency. It will give Greece euro130 billion in loans through 2014 from other eurozone governments and the International Monetary Fund. It was secured after Greece agreed to painful and humiliating measures, including thousands of layoffs of civil service workers and cuts to the minimum wage, imposed by countries suspicious of Greece’s reform efforts after two years of what they called the country’s broken promises.

The finance ministers wrangled until the early morning over the details of the rescue, squeezing last-minute concessions out of private holders of Greek debt who agreed to lose 53.5 percent of the face value of their investment to avoid even more severe losses if Greece fails to pay euro14.5 billion in debt due March 20.

The serious risks of the bailout’s failure include the likelihood that Greece’s economy remains in a deep recession instead of returning to growth in 2013 as the deal assumes. That would undermine chances of paying even the reduced debt load, estimated at a still-high 120 percent of annual economic output in 2020, down from 160 percent now.

Additionally, political outrage over the cutbacks could lead Greece politicians to balk at the tough conditions. That could push rescuer countries ? led by Germany ? to cut off further funding.

Elections in Greece are expected in April. The leaders of the two main parties have committed to the cuts and reform program, but anti-bailout parties have been gaining in the polls.

Greece’s economy shrank 7 percent in the fourth quarter of last year and unemployment is 19 percent, a consequence of cuts in public wages and increased taxes inflicted during a downturn.

If that keeps up, even the rescuers acknowledge the reduction goal of 120 percent of GDP is long gone.

“The risks are clearly on the downside,” said Diego Iscaro, an economist at IHS Global Insight. “By austerity alone, Greece will not solve the problems it has at the moment. We don’t know when the economy will return to growth and how it will grow.”

Greek politicians nevertheless greeted the package as a turning point for their battered country.

“It’s no exaggeration to say that today is a historic day for the Greek economy,” said Greek Premier Lucas Papademos.

The deal helped bring the Dow industrial average over 13,000 on Tuesday for the first time since May 2008, powered by optimism that economic recovery was on the way. It finished up 15.82 points at 12,965.69.

In Washington, White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama called German Chancellor Angela Merkel to thank her for her leadership in helping secure the eurozone agreement. But Carney said European countries need to do more to stave off further crises, including strengthening financial firewalls to prevent one nation’s troubles from spreading across the continent.

Including Greece’s first bailout worth euro110 billion the new deal means every Greek man, woman and child will owe the eurozone and the IMF about euro22,000 ($29,000).

Greece agreed to cut spending and wages, and to permit outsiders to supervise its finances through European Union and IMF officials stationed in Greece. The rescuers also demanded a separate account for the aid money and legal guarantees that creditors get paid before teachers, doctors and police do.

The agreement assumes that banks and investors owed money by Greece will take new bonds that reduce their holdings by more than half.

Even if it later balks at the bailout conditions, Greece would have difficulty writing down the new debt it issued to private bondholders, who demanded stronger legal protections. Official creditors ? the IMF, the eurozone countries and the European Central Bank ? would also have difficulty accepting more writedowns.

Inability to pay ? or unwillingness to accept the harsh conditions ? could lead to a non-negotiated “hard” default that could end in Greece leaving the euro.

On top of the new rescue loans, Athens will also ask banks and other investment funds to forgive it some euro107 billion ($142 billion) in debt, while the European Central Bank and national central banks in the eurozone will forgo profits on their holdings.

The deal “closes the door to an uncontrolled default that would be chaos for Greece and Greek people,” said European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Despite those unprecedented efforts, Greece is at the very best starting on a long and painful road to recovery.

It is being pushed to make its economy more business-friendly and productive by opening access to closed trades and professions; halting rampant tax evasion; allowing more flexibility in wage bargaining between companies and unions; simplifying starting a business; and cutting its bureaucracy.

“It’s not an easy (program), it’s an ambitious one,” said Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF.

For the private debtholders who Greece owes money to, the bond swap will lop euro107 billion off Greece’s euro352 billion load. On top of that, investors will be asked to give Athens 30 years to repay them, compared with just under 7 years.

Average interest rates would fall to 3.65 percent from around 4.8 percent.

Overall losses for private bondholders would be above 70 percent when accounting for the new bonds’ longer repayment period and lower interest rate.

Private investors weren’t the only ones having to give ground. The eurozone countries will reduce the interest that Greece has to pay for its first package of bailout loans to 1.5 percentage points over market rates from between 2 percentage points to 3 percentage points currently.

At the same time, the European Central Bank and the national central banks in the countries that use the euro will forgo profits on their Greek debt holdings, again reducing the costs for Greece.

Several hurdles remain before Greece will see any of the money or other benefits of the new program.

Apart from the implementation of more than 30 different savings and reform measures by Greece, the new bailout has to be debated by parliaments in several member states, including Germany, the Netherlands and Finland.

The IMF also still has to decide how much of the euro130 billion bill it is willing to stump up. The Washington-based fund had indicated its contribution will be lower than the one-third of the total it has provided in previous bailouts.

Lagarde, the IMF chief, said the fund’s board would decide on its contribution in mid-March. It will consider the whole program, “but also additional matters such as the proper setting up of a decent firewall,” she said.

The overall ceiling for eurozone rescue loans has been set at euro500 billion ($663 billion), much of which has already been committed to Ireland, Portugal and now Greece.

Euro leaders will decide at their summit in early March whether that ceiling should be increased.

It will also take some time to see how many private creditors will participate in the debt relief and how many will have to be forced to sign up through new legal clauses. The representatives of the private bondholders said they were confident that investors would find the deal attractive, but some analysts fear that imposing losses on even some bondholders may destabilize markets.

Martie Blodget volunteers for the organization No One Dies Alone where she sits with people in their last moments before death.

Martie Blodget appreciates the cyclical weather patterns of the Pacific Northwest. She finds the near-constant rain to be calming, cleansing, and predictable. She often bikes along the Willamette River trails, riding through the rain and the early morning fog. When she needs time to herself, she takes her kayak to Smith River to see the birdlife. She finds solace in the sights and smells around her. Most nights she cooks dinner with her husband in their quaint, comfortable home surrounded by pictures of their six grandchildren.
No one would ever suspect she is waiting for death.

Blodget is a volunteer for No One Dies Alone, a program first implemented ten years ago at Sacred Heart Medical Center University District in Eugene, Oregon. No One Dies Alone (NODA) is a volunteer organization that provides companions to dying patients who would otherwise be alone. Volunteers can serve as a surrogate family?watching over patients, making sure they are comfortable, alerting the staff if they need assistance, and providing a sense of companionship at the end of life. Those involved with NODA believe this support is a basic human right and a necessity in life?s final moments.

??????????? ?There are only two things that people inevitably do,? says Sandra Clarke, a former Sacred Heart staff nurse. ?They are born, and they die. You do not come into this world alone, and you shouldn?t have to leave it that way.?

For Clarke, the program is of great personal importance. Seventeen years ago, Clarke was working when an elderly gentleman nearing the end of his life requested a favor: he asked her to sit with him and hold his hand as he died. Touched by his request, she agreed, but was forced to leave the room in order to tend to her other patients.

When she returned to the man?s room an hour later, he had passed with his hand outstretched on the bed. The man, who had outlived all of his relatives, died alone.

?It really resonated with me how unjust it was, that someone asked something so simple of me and I couldn?t do it,? Clarke says.

Inspired by her story, Director of Spiritual Care Bob Sherry and Program Director Carleen McCormack formed NODA seven years later.

?People who have no family and people who have huge families do this?it touches everyone,? Clarke says. ?And it has definitely helped with my guilt. Every time I volunteer it makes me feel like yes this is right, this is the way it should be.?

Though it began with a group of only ten volunteers, the program just celebrated its ten-year anniversary. The organization now has a volunteer base of over sixty.

The training process for volunteers is extensive. In order to participate in NODA, applicants must volunteer for a minimum of three months in some other capacity for the hospital and complete a rigorous eight-hour training program.

?[We train] people for how to really be present at the bedside for someone,? McCormack says. ?We really stress that there be no real agendas, particularly religious agendas, at the bedside. It?s one human being, being there for another.? After completion, volunteers sign up for shifts during times they are available and receive calls from a vigil coordinator when needed.

?We want [volunteers] to get to know us; we want to get to know them,? McCormack says. ?It?s a very intimate personal type of volunteerism to be part of No One Dies Alone. You?re one-on-one at a patient?s bedside. We want to make sure that people are prepared for that.?

Martie Blodget?s past experience as a volunteer with Sacred Heart?s Hospice program, which provides end-of-life care, gave her just this sort of preparation when she started working with NODA nine years ago.

?I was very gung-ho [when I started] so I said I was available 24/7,? Blodget says. ?Then you start getting calls. And it?s a little scary at first.?

On Blodget?s first call, she arrived at the hospital late in the evening. She expected her patient, an elderly man, to be in a drug-induced comatose state. Blodget was shocked to find he was perfectly lucid?he even asked her to sing Gilbert and Sullivan songs. She says she?ll never forget that call.

?I said, ?This guy wants to sing some Gilbert and Sullivan? I know a few,? Blodget says. ?So we sang together, and he professed that he had such a wonderful time with all these people coming to be with him. And he died the next day very peacefully.?

Although others might find the experience upsetting, Blodget felt remarkably at peace when she returned home.

?I was so delighted that I could be there for him,? Blodget says. ?I mean, what are we there for? We?re there to act as surrogate family. So that?s my full focus ? definitely on ?let?s get this person dying as quickly and as comfortably as possible.??

Blodget?s second experience with NODA was very different. Her patient, a woman who had just had her ventilator removed, died within minutes of her arrival. Still, Blodget found the experience moving.

?It was a really beautiful experience,? Blodget says. ?Whatever that energy force is in us, I really felt like I could almost see that leave her body and go right out into a tree. I felt a sense of calm?I felt a sense of energy leaving a body that was worthless.?

McCormack says these kinds of experiences are common amongst volunteers, although emotional connections between volunteers and patients are much rarer than many expect. Because volunteers have no personal history with the patient, a deep emotional reaction is not common, as the volunteers? focus is to help dying patients pass on from this life.
While some may be unable to fathom feeling calm detachment in the face of death, Blodget says this is largely due to society?s concept of death itself.

?[Society?s] association is that death is loss, and for most of us, our family, and our friends, that?s exactly what it is,? Blodget says. ?But if we could actually step away and watch the dying process without the emotion, it?s a beautiful experience, it?s a beautiful process. It?s such a natural process to watch it happen.?

This realization has caused Blodget to become comfortable with death and its inevitability. So much so, in fact, that she already has plans for her own.

?I told my family that when my time comes, what I want them to do is bundle me up really well, somehow get me in a lawn chair and get me outside because nature means everything to me,? Blodget says. ?My view on death [has changed].

It is that I?m not afraid to die, but I am afraid not to live.?

McCormack also believes people should cherish death.

?It?s a privilege, really, to be present for a very sacred time in a person?s life?the passing from one life to the next,? McCormack says. ?People are not born alone, and we feel that people should have a presence when they die. That?s what this program is really about.?

What is a template?

If you?re unfamiliar with m-Power templates, let me give you a short explanation. I hesitate to use the word ?template?, because m-Power?s templates are nothing like the typical templates you might find in MS Word or Powerpoint. Those templates do nothing more than provide a basic layout, while m-Power?s templates are far more powerful.

m-Power?s templates are essentially pre-built (yet customizable) web applications. They include the application layout, foundation, and advanced features like ajax suggest, sorting, filtering, searching, graphing, and much more. Basically, once you add your data and define a few specs, you?ve created a web application.

Google may be developing a voice activated remote for Google TV devices, if we're to believe the rumors around the Internet today. Last year Google filed for a patent with the USPTO for a new remote and/or Android application that uses Google's cloud assisted voice recognition technology to navigate through the menus on your Google TV. Of course, everyone is comparing it to Siri, but Google has been working on this technology since they were first to market with Voice Actions in August of 2010.  

According to the filings, users will be able to speak into their Android smartphone or dedicated Google TV remote, transmit their speech to Google's servers to be analyzed, then the correct intent will be sent back through the network to the GTV unit.  There's also indications here to allow the process to work up to a quarter-mile away, so we can tell our television to be on and have Wheel of Fortune playing when we walk in the door. Using your Android phone as a remote for Google TV is something we expect from the people in Mountain View. Tying the two together is natural, and we've already seen an Android app remote that uses voice input, and it works well. Having Google take this further can only mean good things for anyone who's interested in talking back to their television. Hopefully, we see something more about this in the near future — I'm ready for it.

He affirmed on being asked about his participation and speech in the meeting with the theme ‘Flattening the World: Building the Global Knowledge Society’. “The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world’s largest general scientific society. To be asked to give a talk on my research at the annual meeting is a great honour”, he said.

The reporters were further told that he would be speaking on COSMIC i. e. a catalogue of genetic mutations, rearrangements and copy number changes, which lead to the development of cancer. It has been told by him that it is a tool that has been developed by the team for researchers.
